Blog #10: Writer Progression

Since starting this blog, I think I have made some sort of progression as a writer. Having a blog has helped me expand my thinking and ways of expressing my ideas. It has allowed my ideas to be expressed without sensor. By without sensor I mean that I can write however I want and not have to stress on correct spelling, or perhaps modern slang. I'm not sure if I will continue this blog or begin a new one at the moment. Maybe after some time and really focusing on the concept of blogging I might start a new blog.

Pros:

  • Self expression
  • Your interests
  • Fun and free
  • Meet new friends
  • See the opinions of others and their views
Cons:
  • Not everyone is going to agree and may argue with your opinion
  • Random topics
  • Writer's block

Blog #9 : Farm Implements & Rutabagas in a Landscape

I think Ashbery mixes a technical form with cartoon characters because sestinas are the types of poems that are often found to be complex and usually about serious topics. Since he used a familiar cartoon character that many Americans see as a strong person, he can show the seriousness of the poem while using some humor. The cartoon characters lighten the situation at hand and ease the tension. Ashbery wants to show the seriousness of Popeye having to leave his apartment and how it is going to affect people around him. Popeye and his friends, as cartoon characters, are known to be humorous and in that case Ashbery wanted to use them to balance everything.

My favorite line in the poem is, "No more shall pleasant rays of sun refresh your sense of growing old." This line stuck out to me the most and seemed to have a greater meaning in my opinion. I took that line as saying that day in and day out, we look to the sun as a sign of bringing in a new day. With each new day we are getting older and older with the rising and setting of the sun. We are reminded of our age with the new days but we shouldn't be focused on that. I understood it to mean that we should focus on the moment in time because we have no idea what could happen within the next minute, hour, day, months, or even years. Each day, or "pleasant rays of sun" that we encounter mean a new beginning and we should always keep that in mind and appreciate the time we have on Earth.

Rainy Days and Memories Villenelle

Rainy Days & Memories
As the water hits on the window pane
I look out to see the open field,
Ping, pong, the signal of the forceful rain.

Leaving plenty of time to rack your brain
Though memories are often placed on yield,
As the water hits on the window pane.

Reminisce on the sunny days in Maine
Go back to a place that serves as a shield,
Ping, pong, the signal of the forceful rain.

Echoes evolve from the outside drain
Patterns of sounds that are now revealed,
As the water hits on the window pane.

Sit back and relax try not to complain
Days like these can turn into battlefields,
Ping, pong, the signal of the forceful rain.

So embrace this day no need to explain
Just allow your soul to be clean and healed,
As the water hits the window pane
Ping, pong, the signal of the forceful rain.

Vietnam War & the Wars Today

When I think of the US in the Vietnam war, it brings to mind the reasons for being there in the first place. We began sending troops in the 1960s to assist South Vietnam from being taken over by communism. We took our concerns for the people there and did not want to see them fall into the "Domino effect," which if it had been successful, other countries in the area would have fell into communism as well. The concern we had led us to more and more troops being sent in to fulfill the requirement of having enough to fight and lend protection. The more we were able to accomplish with the war, we could lessen up on the troops we sent and remained with the ones we had.

The wars in Iraq & Afghanistan strike me as similar to the war in Vietnam because we are still dealing with other countries and their problems with others. We are fighting for others and in the end more and more of our American troops are getting killed everyday. With the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, with President Obama he is trying to take out troops while he can without having as many deaths occur. The wars going on today are much like the Vietnam war in the sense that they are having the US, who has ties with the countries, protecting them from what they consider higher forces.

Blog #5: Breaking Free of Traditions

It can be hard to break free from a cultural heritage, at least in my opinion. It can be hard because since its something that a person's family, friends, or even community does they are faced with it often. When they are placed in the position where that heritage is redundant its hard to try to break free of what they think is normal and right. Society tries to keep us in line by telling us who we should be friends with, who not to be friends with, what to wear, what to eat, how much to eat, the "right" model weight or else no one will love us and a million other things. Society has gotten under the skin that we forget that we are all individuals with our own minds and we can in fact decide what we believe is right and wrong. For example, we see bullying happening in schools very often and yes, society tells us that it is wrong but another part of society seems to think its okay because of what they think to be a justified reasons. We could as individuals choose to see that this is not what we need, what we need to do is step up and fight back against it but not in the physical way. If more people would stand up and argue that bullying was wrong and report it we could be more open as to who we see as friends. More and more television is giving us the idea for women of what the "dream girl" looks like and nine times out of ten it is a model who is a size zero and roughly about that size. If we weren't so closed minded we could exactly see what truly matters, the inner beauty. But we struggle to see that and in turn make a negative impact. Some people break free by standing out and voicing their different opinions. They try to get others to see that there are other options out there if they just opened their minds to new things. I don't think there is a great deal of disregarding societal norms because it shows that you actually care about something and are passionate about it being known to others.

"The Love of My Life" : Blog 5

To say that China and Jeremy were condemned by their peers could be wrong. I say this because China made a reference to the other kids in their school, she didn't want to be one of the statistics. "I will never, never be like those breeders that bring their puffed-up squalling little red-faced babies to class," ("The Love of my Life, pg. 560). China told those exact words to Jeremy to put an emphasis on that idea. Just from that statement I don't think her peers would show complete condemnation over the couple. Yes, they would feel some kind of way because the baby was killed but the fact that China was pregnant probably didn't phase them. Personally, I would probably feel some condemnation for the couple because instead of letting the baby be taken to a hospital or fire station they decided on killing the baby girl. The baby could have still been alive and living a healthy life in a safe home with adopted parents. It was a selfish move on their part in my honest opinion
From the way that China was talking in the beginning of the story it made it seem like the two were the "perfect couple."
Boyle did persuade me to see that an event like this could happen to anyone. It was easy for him because we hear about teens getting pregnant so young, but for them to just throw away the baby, that's something so crazy. I do not believe there is a true reason as to how behavior like this can be explained. For someone to just throw a baby away without feeling some remorse it unacceptable because there are always better options. It's not hard to believe that something like this happens because we hear about it in the news, we just would rather not have to see or hear about it.
